Medium wave reception in Kazan     

 
Below is a table of medium wave stations that are more or less regularly heard at my location in Kazan, Russia. It's known that distant reception in this band is only possible during the periods of darkness and dusk. All times are UTC.

The table stores my personal observations for the season of spring autumn 2003. See bandscan data of current season here.

Usage of asterisks: *0500 denotes start of transmission, 2200* denotes end of transmission. Transmitter locations are given in parentheses. Double slash (//) refers to a parallel (usually a stronger one) frequency.

  • Local broadcasts from Cheboksary, Russia:
    Mo     0210-0300, 0810-0900, 1310-1400, 1410-1500

    Sa     0210-0300, 0310-0400, 0810-0900, 1410-1500, 1510-1600

    Radio Rossii news go on the air before each local broadcast, for the initial 10 minutes of the hour. All other time station relays Radio Mayak. Joint radio magazine of 7 national republics of Volga region is on the air Sundays at 0400-0500 (// 252 kHz Kazan, 900 kHz Yoshkar Ola, etc.)
  • Russia, Radio Mayak (Cheboksary), nights till 2300*, mornings since 0055. Distance to the transmitter is about 200 kilometers, therefore it is audible even in daylight.
  • Iran, 1st domestic program in Farsi (Hamadan or Iranshahr), evenings/nights/mornings at 2030-0130 (fades out then).

540 kHz
  • Russia, Radio Mayak (Orenburg), 2330-0200 (fades out then) and at 1700.
  • Iran, 1st domestic program in Farsi (Mashhad), at 2240, // 531 kHz.
  • Kuwait, in Arabic, at 2240.
  • Hungary, Kossuth Radio, 2017-2125 and later.

549 kHz
  • Russia, Radio Mayak, after 0200 (fades out soon) and evenings at 1700-1920 and later.
  • Ukraine, Promin program, at 2245-0200. Probably the same program (or maybe Radio Kultura, UR-3?) at 2000.

558 kHz
  • Iran, Radio Farhang (Gheslah), in Farsi, the whole evening, night and morning, 1600-0130.
  • Finland, YLE (Helsinki), very weak. In Finnish at 2245-2400.
  • Unknown weak station, language sounded like Italian for me. Could be Radio Svizzera - Rete 1, Switzerland. Heard only once at 2250.

567 kHz
  • Russia, Radio Rossii (Volgograd), 0100-0430 (fade off) and 1550-2100*.
  • Romania, Radio Romania Actualitati, heard at 2300-2400 and later.

576 kHz
  • Russia, Radio Mayak, at 2015.

585 kHz
  • Iran, Radio Quran, in Farsi, 2040-2400 and later.
  • Russia, Radio Rossii (Perm), broadcasting starts at 0000. Also noted at 1700-1835. It's not known whether local programs are now on this frequency.

594 kHz
  • Russia, Radio Rossii (Izhevsk), mornings (0430-0530, until fade-out) and evenings (1700-2100*).
  • Turkey, TRT-4 (Malatya). Noted at 2100-2120 and later. // 1062 kHz.
  • Bulgaria, national program "Horizont" (250 kW from Pleven and a couple of low-power units). 2315-2400 and later.
  • Russia, Radio Mayak, comes from south direction (Vladikavkaz?). Noted at 1920.

603 kHz
  • Romania, Radio Romania Actualitati. At 2040-2400 and later. // 855 kHz.

612 kHz
  • Russia (Moscow), religious program at 2000-2100, // 1089 kHz. Program name is "Yevangelskiye Chteniya" (i.e. Gospel readings).
  • Russia, Voice of Russia, Sodruzhestvo service (Moscow), in Russian after 2100.
  • BBC World Service in English (relayed via Ukraine). Noted at 2030-2115.
  • Jordan, Radio Jordan, with news in Arabic at 0000. // 801 kHz.

621 kHz
  • Russia, Radio Rossii. Sounds like two slightly unsynchronized transmitters (Syktyvkar and Makhachkala?). Heard at 2040-2100*.
  • Egypt, Voice of Arabs (Sawt-ul-Arab), in Arabic at 2115-2400 and later. // 1008 and 1107 kHz.
  • Russia, Radio Mayak, at 0400 and 0810-2100*. Might be an image produced by my receiver (its IF equals to 450 kHz).

630 kHz
  • Russia, Radio Mayak (Saratov), at 1730-2100*.
  • Kuwait, Quran program, heard at 0005.
  • Tunisia (presumed), with news and general coverage broadcasting in Arabic, 2100-2400 and later.
  • Turkey, TRT-4 (Cukurova/Adana), in Turkish at 2110. // 180 kHz.

639 kHz
  • BBC in Arabic (via Cyprus), at 0000.
  • Iran, VoIRI External Service, in Turkish at 1923-1930*. // 702 kHz.
  • Russia, Radio Rossii (Omsk), 1800-1900*. Local advertising insertion noted at 1856.

648 kHz
  • Bulgaria, national program "Christo Botev" (Plovdiv), at 2050-2250 and later.
  • UK, BBC World Service (Orfordness), in English at 2255-2300.
  • Ukraine, 1st domestic program (Oktyabrske, Crimea). Heard in Ukrainian at 1900-2100 and later. Transmitter was off-air for financial reasons before 20 June (since February).

657 kHz
  • Ukraine, Radio Ukraine Int (Chernivtsy), in Romanian at 2120. Some broadcast from the same direction is audible before 2100; I presume it is Radio Kultura, the 3rd channel of Ukrainian Radio
  • Iran, 1st domestic program in Farsi (Rasht), at 2300-2400 and later.
  • Russia, Chechnya Svobodnaya, 1850-2000 and later. // 171 kHz. Location is unknown.
  • Unknown station with Quran reading (not Iran!) at 2320.

666 kHz
  • Syria, Radio Damascus, in Arabic at 2050-2315. // 747 kHz.
  • BBC World Service (via Yekaterinburg, Russia). In Russian at 2010, in English at 2055. In some days of the week (Sa/Su?) English starts as early as 2000.
  • Iran (presumed), in Farsi at 2105.
  • Russia, Radio Mayak, comes from north-south direction. Noted at 1925.

675 kHz
  • Russia, Radio Mayak (Ukhta or some southern regions, or even other FSU states?), at 1900-2100*.
  • Unidentified station with Quran reading at 2350-2400 and later. A similar broadcast was also found on 936 kHz, under Radio Damascus. Saudi Arabia???.
  • Netherlands, Radio 10 FM, with music program and jingles/identifications at 2255 (heard in May 2003). But at the beginning of June MW frequencies have been redistributed in the country, and now 675 kHz is used by Arrow Classic Rock.

684 kHz
  • Iran, 1st domestic program in Farsi (Mashhad). At 1850-2100 and later. // 531 kHz.
  • Russia, unknown religious station (St.Petersburg), heard at 2107.

693 kHz
  • Russia, Radio Rossii (Ufa), 0815-1200, 1700-19.00*, *2300-0005. No local broadcasts on this frequency, they only go out on 162 kHz!
  • Deutsche Welle (via Moscow, Russia), noted in Russian at 1900-2000, in German at 2000-2200.

700...900 kHz

702 kHz
  • Turkey, TRT-4 (Catalca). In Turkish at 1855-0030. // 180 kHz.
  • Iran, VoIRI External Service. In Turkish at 1830-1930, in Russian at 1930-2030. Unknown language (Georgian?) used at 1725-1800*.

711 kHz
  • Egypt, Youth & sports program ("... shabap al naha min Al Qahira") in Arabic in the evenings, at 1930-2400 and later.
  • Voice of Rebellious Iraq (Sawt ul Iraq at ta'ar), in Arabic at 2030-2100 and later. I presume it comes from Iran.

720 kHz
  • Broadcast in Farsi at 2000-2115 and later. Iran? Never heard it parallel to their other domestic frequencies.

729 kHz
  • United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi, evenings at 1900-2240 and later.

738 kHz
  • Russia, Radio Mayak (Chelyabinsk), 1745-1900.

747 kHz
  • Iran, 1st domestic program in Farsi, evenings at 1900-2220 and later, // 900 kHz.
  • Syria, Radio Damascus, in Arabic at 1900-2210 and later. // 936 kHz.
  • Bulgaria, national program "Horizont", at 2100.

756 kHz
  • Romania, Radio Romania International, in Aromanian at 2030-2100.
  • Voice of America (relayed via Lugoj, Romania) in Serbian at *21.00.

765 kHz
  • Russia, Radio Rossii (Petrozavodsk), heard at 1955-2100*.
  • Turkey, TRT-4 (Gaziantep) at 1900-2205*.

774 kHz
  • Russia, Radio Mayak (Voronezh) at 1820-2100*.
  • Unknown station with Quran reading after 2100.
  • Unknown station with music after 2100. I guess it's Egypt, Middle Eastern Commercial Service.

783 kHz
  • Saudi Arabia, BSKSA 2nd channel, in Arabic at 1950-2200.

792 kHz
  • A station in Farsi or Dari (???) at 1915. Absolutely non-Iranian style.
  • Greece, Voice of Greece in Greek at 2000-2100.
  • Unidentified station with Arab-type songs at 1855. Very weak. Time pips (the latest pip was longer) at 1900.

801 kHz
  • A station in Arabic at 1930-2100 and later. Most likely it's Jordan.
  • Azerbaijan, 1st domestic program in Azeri, very weak at 1830. // 891 kHz.

810 kHz
  • Russia, Radio Mayak (Volgograd) at 1700-2100*.
  • Quran reading (station from UAE?) after 2100.
  • Macedonia, 1st domestic program, in Macedonian at 2100.

819 kHz
  • Egypt, main program in Arabic at 1900-2100 and later, as well as at 0000-0100.

828 kHz
  • Some weak music at 1900.

837 kHz
  • Iran, 1st domestic program (?), in Farsi at 1900.

846 kHz
  • Russia, Radio Rossii from southern direction (Elista?), at 1730-2000 and later.
  • Russia, Radio Radonezh (transmitter near Moscow), in Russian at 1800-1900*.
  • Russia, Radio Yunost (Izhevsk), leaves the air at 1900*.

855 kHz
  • Russia, Radio Rossii (Penza), starts at *0100, heard evenings at 1700-2000 and later.
  • Romania, Radio Romania Actualitati, in Romanian at 2000 and later.

864 kHz
  • TWR (relayed via Armenia), in Farsi at 1745-1810, in Kurdish at 1810-1825.
  • Egypt, Radio Holy Quran, in Arabic at 2050-2200 and later. But at 0000-0100 signal is parallel to 819 kHz; that means that during this time transmitter carries the main Arabic program from Cairo.
  • Unidentified station in Farsi, Dari or Tajik at 2050-2100 and later. Calls itself "Radio Azadi" (i.e. "Liberty"), but the frequency is not listed in IBB schedule at this time. There was a suggestion that the broadcast may be relayed by Information Radio transmitter in Afghanistan (Kabul and Kandahar).

873 kHz
  • Russia, Radio Rossii (net of transmitters), starts at *0100, 0430-0500 and later, 1700-2100*.
  • Unknown station in Arabic at 2130.
  • A station in Bulgarian (I guess) at 2130.

882 kHz
  • Russia, Radio Mayak (Stavropol), 1800-2100*.
  • Saudi Arabia, Radio Holy Quran, in Arabic at 2130-2200.

891 kHz
  • Azerbaijan, 1st domestic program in Azeri, at 1830-2200 and later.
  • Russia, Radio Mayak, very weak, 2130-2200 and later.

900...1100 kHz

900 kHz
  • Russia, Radio Mayak (Sovetskiy, Mari El). Starts at *0100, also noted at 0500 and 1700-2000, *2130-2200 and later.
  • Russia, Mariyskoye Radio, local broadcasts schedule isn't compiled yet. Joint radio magazine of 7 national republics of Volga region is on the air Sundays at 0400-0500.
  • Iran, 1st domestic program in Farsi, 2200 and 2400.

  • Russia, Radio Mayak (Makhachkala?), 1800-2100*.
  • Russia, Radio Rossii (Archangelsk), 1955-2100*.
  • Syria, Radio Damascus, in Arabic at 2100-2200 and later.

  • Syria, Radio Damascus, in Arabic after 2000.
  • Unknown station with Arabic talks and Quran after 2000.
  • Unknown station (tentatively Iran's external service in Assyrian) at 1810-1900.

  • Russia, Radio Rossii (Rostov-na-Donu, or Novocherkassk) at 1800-2000.

  • Turkey, TRT-4 (Trabzon), 1700-2000 and later. // 1062 kHz.

  • Non-stop music at 0045. Comes from south-western direction. Tentatively it's Bulgarian program Horizont (Shumen).

972 kHz
  • Broadcast in Russian at 1800-2000 and later. Must be Voice of Russia (Sodruzhestvo program) via Ukrainian facilities.

981 kHz
  • Greece, broadcast in Greek at 0000. Herman Boel's EMWG suggests ERA Sport (Athens).

990 kHz
  • Cyprus, relay of US-led Radio Sawa in Arabic at 0030.

999 kHz
  • Quran-reading station at 0030. Handbooks suggest either Saudi Arabia or Qatar.

1008 kHz
  • Unidentified station in Arabic (Voice of Arabs, Egypt?) at 0030.

1017 kHz

1026 kHz
  • Iran, 1st domestic program in Farsi (Tabriz), at 0030.

1035 kHz
