Medium wave reception in Kazan     

 
Below is a table of medium wave stations that are more or less regularly heard at my location in Kazan, Russia. It's known that distant reception in this band is only possible during the periods of darkness and dusk. All times are UTC.

The table stores my personal observations for the season of spring 2004 autumn 2004. See bandscan data of current season here.

Usage of asterisks: *0500 denotes start of transmission, 2200* denotes end of transmission. Transmitter locations are given in parentheses. Double slash (//) refers to a parallel (usually a stronger one) frequency.

531 kHz
  • Russia, Radio Mayak and domestic broadcasts (Cheboksary). I cannot determine sign-on time yet some days transmitter is only heard after 0200, while other days reception is possible as early as 0145. Signs off at 2000. Radio Rossii news go on the air before each local broadcast, during the initial 10 minutes of the hour.
  • Iran, 1st domestic program in Persian (Hamadan or Iranshahr), at 1800-2400 and later.
  • Unknown station with a kind of news after 0000. Might be Radio Romania Actualitati.

540 kHz
  • Kuwait, in Arabic, at 1900-2400.
  • Iran, 1st domestic program in Persian (Mashhad), at 2000-2200 and later, // 531 kHz.
  • Russia, Radio Mayak (Orenburg), noted at 0000 and 2100, weak.
  • Hungary, Kossuth Radio, in Hungarian, at 2100-2200 and later.

549 kHz
  • Russia, Radio Mayak (various sites), at 1800-2100.
  • Ukraine, Promin' program, in Ukrainian, at 2200-2400 and later; probably the same prohram was heard at 1900-2000.
  • Saudi Arabia, 1st domestic program in Arabic, at 2100-2200 and later. // 1440 kHz.
  • Azerbaijan, 1st domestic program in Azeri, heard only once just before 1900. // 801 kHz.

558 kHz
  • Iran, Radio Farhang (Gheslah), in Persian, at 1700-2400 and later.
  • Unidentified station in Arabic, weak and non-daily. Noted at 2100-2200 and later.

567 kHz
  • Russia, Radio Rossii (Volgograd), at 1630-2000 and later. Must carry local broadcasting in more early hours, as well as in the morning.
  • Romania, Radio Romania Actualitati, at 2100-2400. // 855 kHz.
  • Syria, 1st domestic program in Arabic. At 2100-2400. // 747 and 936 kHz.

576 kHz
  • Russia, Radio Mayak, weak at 1830-2000*. Possibly comes from Astrakhan (50 kW).

585 kHz
  • Russia, Radio Rossii (Perm), at 1800-1900, as well as at 2300-2400 and later.
  • Iran, Radio Quran, in Persian, at 2000-2400.
  • Saudi Arabia, 1st domestic program in Arabic, at 2100-2200 and later. // 1440 kHz.

594 kHz
  • Russia, Radio Rossii (Izhevsk), at 0100-1600, 1900-2100*.
  • Turkey, TRT-1 (Malatya), in Turkish, at 2000-2200 and later. // 1062 kHz.
  • Iran (Shiraz), in Persian, at 2100-2400. Regional broadcasts noted after 2300 ("...shabakiye ostaniye..." in station's ID).
  • Saudi Arabia, in Arabic, at 2200-2400.

  • Romania, Radio Romania Actualitati, at 1850-2000, 2100-2300, and also after 0000. // 855 kHz.
  • Some unidentified Middle-Eastern music at 1800-2000, 2100-2200.
  • Cyprus, CBC in Greek after 2100. Rarely heard.

  • Russia, Voice of Russia (Moscow), in Russian, at 1900-2000, 2100-2200.
  • Russia, program "Yevangelskiye Chteniya" (Gospel Readings), in Russian, at 2000-2100.
  • Jordan, Radio Jordan, in Arabic, at 2200-2300 and also after 0000. // 801 kHz.

621 kHz
  • Egypt, Sawt-al-Arab, in Arabic, at 2100-2300 and after 0000.
  • Russia, Radio Rossii (Syktyvkar?), at 1900-2000.

630 kHz
  • Russia, Radio Mayak (Saratov), at 1700-2000.
  • Romania, Radio Romania Actualitati, at 2100-2300 and 0000-0100.
  • Turkey, TRT-4 (Cukurova/Adana), in Turkish, at 2100-2200 and (as I guess) after 0000. // 702 kHz.
  • Unknown Middle-Eastern station with Quran at 2200. Might be Kuwait.

639 kHz
  • Iran, external service (Voice of the I.R.I.). Turkish at 1830-1930*.
  • Unknown station in Arabic at 2100-2300. I presume it's BBC via Cyprus relay.

648 kHz
  • Ukraine, 1st domestic program in Ukrainian (Oktyabrske, Crimea?), at 1700-2000 and 2100-2200.
  • Iran, 1st domestic program in Persian (Isfahan), after 2200.

657 kHz
  • Unidentified Middle-Eastern station, weak, 0000-0100. Most likely it was Iran.
  • Iran, in Persian (Rasht), after 1900. Plays National Anthem at 1927 and then apparently signs off.
  • Israel, Kol Israel, Reshet Bet (Tel Aviv), in Hebrew, at 2100-2300.

  • Syria, 1st domestic program in Arabic, at 1900-2000 and 2100-2300.

  • Iran, 1st domestic program in Persian (Mashhad), after 2200.

  • Russia, Radio Rossii (Ufa), at 0400 (fades out soon), 1800-1900. Sometimes heard in the daylight period (0930-1010), if propagation permits.
  • Jordan, Radio Jordan, in Arabic, at 2200 and later. // 801 kHz.

  • Iran, external service (Voice of the I.R.I.). Azeri at 1630-1700 (fades out by 1630, but the broadcast itself apparenly starts earlier). Georgian at 1700-1800. Swahili at 1800-1830. Turkish at 1830-1930. Russian after 1930.
  • Turkey (TRT-4?), in Turkish, at 1845-1900.
  • BBC (via Oman), in Arabic, after 2200.

  • Ukraine, 1st domestic program in Ukrainian (Donetsk), at 1730-1900.

  • Unknown station, in Arabic at 1740-1800 and later. Might be BBC via Cyprus facilities.
